NB: Please note that the South African Furniture Initiative Shutdown
period is as follows:

The SAFI Johannesburg office will be relocating to 39 Empire Road,
Parktown extension, Johannesburg, from the 2nd of January 2018.

SAFI ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
Congratulations to the SAFI Board Members elected at the SAFI
AGM that took place on the 23rd of August 2018 in Cape Town.

QUALITY COUNCIL FOR
TRADE AND OCCUPATIONS (QCTO) ROADSHOW 2018
The QCTO hosted provincial road shows between the 4th October - 6th
December 2018 to strengthen the implementation of a
Single National Quality Assurance System
for qualifications and part qualifications registered on the
Occupational Qualifications Sub-Framework (OQSF). |
The roadshow visited 9 different locations across the country in a bid towards the implementation of a National
Quality Assurance System for Qualifications and Part Qualifications registered on the Occupational Qualifications
Sub-Framework (OQSF) of the National Qualifications Framework (NQF). |

GARDEN ROUTE EMPLOYERS’ ASSOCIATION WORKSHOP

The Garden Route and Employers
Association (GREA) in collaboration with
the South African Furniture Initiative (SAFI) hosted a furniture
information session on the
5th September 2018. The session focused
on capacitating entrepreneurs when they
applying for funding and ways to navigate the investment process
through a structured
programme. The programme also focused
on business fundamentals that could potentially allow them to
position their |
companies for investment and align
themselves in terms of BBBEE.

FURNITURE BEDDING UPHOLSTERY MANUFACTURES ASSOCIATION WORKSHOP
The Furniture Bedding and Upholstery Manufacturing Association (FBUMA)
in collaboration with the South African Furniture Initiative (SAFI)
hosted a furniture information session on the 18th September 2018.
The session focused on the Agro-Processing Support Scheme (APSS)
application process and collaboration with Production technologies
South Africa.
SAFI EXHIBITS AT CTEX CAREER AND TRAINING EXPO
Congratulations to the student from of Sibelius High School for
winning the SAFI Furniture Career Competition hosted at the CTEX
expo.

THE 5TH ANNUAL KNYSNA TIMBER FESTIVAL
The much-anticipated Knysna Timber Festival took place from Friday
5th October to Sunday 7th October 2018. The festival showcases local
excellence across the value chain in the town where South Africa’s
timber industry first took root. The highlights at this year’s
festival included factory tours that provide an opportunity to
witness the heartbeat of a local timber industry where delegates had
the chance to take a tour around Knysna’s amazing wood factories and
see wood artisans at work.
The Jobs Summit brought together government,
business, labour and community organisations to advance job
creation. It provided all stakeholders with a platform for open
discussion on the challenges faced by each social partner in the
creation of jobs.
SAFI was invited to attend the bilateral meeting and the
Presidential job summit held on the 4th and 5th of October 2018 to
advance job creation in the furniture manufacturing industry.

DESIGN COMPETITION FINALIST ANNOUNCEMENT
The Furniture Design Competition winners
will be announced at the
Proudly SA Buy
Local Summit taking place on the 12th
March 2019 at
the Sandton International Convention Centre and the finalists will
be given an opportunity to showcase their products. |

PUM MENTORSHIP PROGRAMME
SAFI in collaboration with PUM presented a Mentorship Programme. PUM
believes that small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are the
backbone of sustainable economic development and as a catalyst of
innovation, job creation and growth.

IDE DESIGN MISSION AFRICA 2018
SAFI partnered with IDE for the fourth annual Design Mission Africa
that was held on the 6th and 7th of December 2018 at the Hilton,
Sandton, Johannesburg.
