CTEX CAREER AND TRAINING EXPO

THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO PARTICIPATED IN THE SOUTH AFRICAN FURNITURE INITIATIVE (SAFI) CTEX CAREER AND TRAINING COMPETITION!!!

The Career and Training Expo (CTEX) has established itself as the most successful career and training event in South Africa. CTEX brings many different Industries together with a rapidly growing portfolio of exhibitors.

The South African Furniture Initiative (SAFI) exhibited, for the first time, at the CTEX Expo on the 18th and 19th of July 2018 at the V& A Waterfront in Cape Town. Our aim was to use the platform to promote the career opportunities in the Furniture Industry.

To create excitement in this endeavour, SAFI ran a competition where the students visiting the expo were required to provide input in what they felt are potential career opportunities in the Furniture Industry and use our social media platforms to upload their entries for the competition.

In August 2018, our Chief Operating Officer did the random draw at our offices and the lucky winner was Matthew Simpson from Sibelius High who won a Lap desk for himself and two Office Chairs for his school. The prizes are to the value of R5 000 and was sponsored by FurnAll and South African Furniture Initiative (SAFI).

Congratulations Matthew Simpson!!

Development

KWAZULU-NATAL PROVINCIAL SKILLS DEVELOPMENT FORUM

Background
Following a call for public comments by the Minister of Higher Education and Training on the National Skills Development Plan (NSDP), the National Skills Authority (NSA) invited all skills development stakeholders from Quality Councils, SETAs, Government, Business, Labour, Education and Training Providers, Community Constituencies, Research Institutions, Professional Bodies and the general public to consult on the NSDP. The nine provincial workshops coordinated by the provincial offices of the Premiers were convened from 25 January to 06 February 2018 and concluded with a targeted stakeholder roundtable on 16 February 2018 with the aim of soliciting policy inputs from skills development experts and strategic organisations.

Key areas of support or agreement
There was an overwhelming support for the proposal on the following:

  • Long term planning and alignment of SETA funding to a medium-term strategic funding framework
  • Clustering/merging of SETAs. Any intention to amalgamate or consolidate the SETA's should be thoroughly researched, adequately consulted with NSA and relevant social partners and thereafter be published in a gazette for public comment.
  • Permanency of SETAs. Principles for the skills development landscape and criteria for SETA demarcation should be taken into consideration
  • NSDP goals, objectives and principles
  • Shared Services.
  • Funding for occupational programmes
