Role Overview
The role involves overseeing and supporting the ceramic production process within the studio. This is a hands-on position requiring both creative and technical expertise, along with strong organisational skills.
Depending on experience, the role may include production oversight and coordination, or a technical production focus within the ceramics department. The ideal candidate will have strong experience in slip casting, mould making and glazing, and will be comfortable working across multiple projects while maintaining the highest production and quality standards.
Key Responsibilities:
• Planning and overseeing daily ceramic production.
• Coordinating with the design and production teams to ensure smooth workflow and timely completion of orders.
• Developing, refining and maintaining high-quality production standards and processes.
• Taking initiative in problem-solving and improving efficiencies within the department.
• Overseeing and participating in slip casting, mould making, clay preparation, glazing and kiln firing.
• Ensuring consistency in colour, finish and quality across all ceramic items.
• Maintaining studio equipment and ensuring the safe handling of materials and firing processes.
Requirements:
• Minimum of 3 years professional experience in ceramics, with strong expertise in slip casting and mould making (essential).
• Solid working knowledge of electric kilns, including general maintenance, heating elements, thermocouples, firebricks and overall kiln operation, as well as the management and programming of Van Tuyl controllers.
• Experience working with various clay bodies including earthenware and stoneware.
• Strong understanding of production processes and timelines within a design or manufacturing environment.
• Excellent attention to detail and craftsmanship.
• Proactive, self-motivated and able to work independently.
• Experience with glazing techniques and kiln management.
• Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines.
• Strong communication and organisational skills.
