SAFI Leads Strategic Skills and Innovation Initiatives to Strengthen the South African Furniture Industry

The South African Furniture Initiative (SAFI) successfully met the FP&M SETA DG Grant Funding deadline on 15 March 2026, submitting a series of strategic funding applications aimed at aligning the furniture industry’s development with FIMP, QCTO regulations, the National Skills Plan, and FPM SETA priorities. These initiatives reflect SAFI’s commitment to workforce development, entrepreneurship, and digital transformation in the sector.

Work-Integrated Learning (WIL): Bridging Education and Industry

SAFI’s first funding application focuses on expanding Work-Integrated Learning (WIL) opportunities. WIL goes beyond classroom theory by fostering partnerships between educational institutions and industry employers, including furniture manufacturers.

Through structured WIL programmes, learners gain practical, hands-on experience in real workplaces, sharpening skills and building confidence before graduation. Manufacturers benefit by contributing to the development of a talent pipeline, addressing skills gaps, and identifying potential future employees.
South African government initiatives increasingly support this model, emphasizing collaboration between schools, employers, and policy-makers to ensure students gain workplace experience that aligns with labour market needs. SAFI’s WIL programmes exemplify how education and industry can jointly cultivate a work-ready workforce for the future.

Youth Entrepreneurial Furniture Upholstery Skills Programme

Addressing the sector’s shortage of skilled artisans with entrepreneurial capabilities, SAFI has submitted an application for a 12-month Youth Entrepreneurial Furniture Upholsterer Skills Programme. Targeting unemployed youth aged 18–35, this programme is aligned with the QCTO-accredited Basic Upholsterer Level 2 Skills Programme (SAQA ID: 683401004, 28 credits, 280 hours).

The programme combines technical upholstery skills with entrepreneurship training, equipping learners to establish sustainable micro-enterprises. By integrating technical craftsmanship with business acumen, SAFI aims to create a new generation of self-sufficient artisans capable of driving innovation and growth in the furniture sector.

Developing Occupational Training Practitioners

To strengthen the sector’s training infrastructure, SAFI has applied for funding to develop Occupational Training Practitioners. The South African furniture manufacturing sector has shown increasing commitment to QCTO-aligned occupational qualifications, with:

• 10 manufacturers fully accredited
• 5 manufacturers at an advanced stage of approval
• 6 manufacturers in the final stage of assessment centre approval
• 7 additional manufacturers started their application process in February 2026

A critical shortage of occupational moderators has slowed workplace and assessment centre approvals.

SAFI plans a national roadshow in Q2 2026, engaging manufacturers, TVET colleges, and higher education institutions to support workplace accreditation and encourage participation in taking up the occupational qualifications that would address these skills gaps.

Enhancing Labour Competence and Workplace Governance

SAFI’s proposal for labour skills development focuses on enhancing workplace governance and labour relations. Key objectives include:
1. Building capacity of Bargaining Council members, shop stewards, and HR/IR practitioners.
2. Empowering participants to interpret and apply labour legislation, including the LRA, BCEA, and OHS Act.
3. Promoting workplace compliance, safety, and fair practices.
4. Supporting FPM SETA’s mandate for workforce upskilling, non-pivotal skills development, and sector transformation.

Digital Transformation and 4IR/5IR Research

Recognizing the importance of digital transformation, SAFI has applied for funding for a national research initiative on Fourth and Fifth Industrial Revolution (4IR and 5IR) readiness. This study will assess the sector’s preparedness for adopting advanced technologies and human-centred innovation.
The research will provide empirical data to inform strategic funding, skills development reforms, SME digital readiness, and policy alignment, positioning the South African furniture industry to thrive in the evolving global economy.

Funding Implementation Note

All of the initiatives outlined above — WIL, Youth Entrepreneurial Furniture Upholstery Skills Programme, Occupational Training Practitioners, Labour Competence and Workplace Governance, and 4IR/5IR research — can only be implemented with the approval of these funding applications. SAFI’s strategic planning and operational rollout are dependent on securing the DG Grant funding from FP&M SETA.

Conclusion

SAFI’s coordinated funding applications reflect a strategic vision to strengthen the South African furniture industry through skills development, entrepreneurship, occupational capacity building, labour governance, and digital readiness. By aligning industry practice with national frameworks and international best practices, SAFI is shaping a resilient, innovative, and future-ready furniture sector.
