Artificial intelligence, robotics, smart manufacturing and sustainable production are rapidly transforming industries across the globe. For South Africa’s furniture manufacturing sector, understanding how these technologies will shape future competitiveness has become increasingly important.

To help answer some questions, SAFI has secured funding from the Fibre Processing and Manufacturing Sector Education and Training Authority (FP&M SETA) for a groundbreaking research project examining the impact of the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) and Fifth Industrial Revolution (5IR) on the local furniture industry.

According to Lynn Adonis, Administrator and Qualifications Manager at SAFI, the research comes at a critical time for the sector: “Furniture manufacturing around the world is changing rapidly. Technologies such as artificial intelligence, robotics, Internet of Things systems, additive manufacturing and smart production processes are creating new opportunities, but they are also creating new challenges. We need to understand what these changes mean for South African manufacturers and how we can prepare for them.”

The research will investigate the current level of 4IR and 5IR adoption within the local furniture industry, identify barriers to implementation and explore how technological change is affecting jobs, skills development and workforce readiness. It will also examine opportunities for more sustainable, ethical and human-centred manufacturing practices.

While the 4IR focuses on automation, artificial intelligence, robotics and digital manufacturing systems, the emerging 5IR places greater emphasis on collaboration between people and technology, sustainability, craftsmanship and customer-centred production. “For the furniture sector, the challenge is not choosing between technology and people,” explains Adonis. “It is finding ways to use technology to improve productivity and competitiveness while preserving the creativity, craftsmanship and skills that make our industry unique.”

The research is expected to provide valuable guidance for manufacturers, policymakers, training institutions and industry stakeholders. It will identify strategies to improve competitiveness, strengthen skills development, support small and medium-sized enterprises and encourage innovation across the sector.

A particular focus will be placed on the future skills required by the industry. Areas such as AI-assisted design, CNC operations, smart manufacturing systems, digital craftsmanship, sustainable production techniques and human-machine collaboration are expected to become increasingly important in the years ahead.

“One of the most important outcomes of this research will be a clearer understanding of the skills our future workforce will need,” says Adonis. “That information will help shape occupational qualifications, training programmes and curriculum development so that learners are equipped for the workplaces of tomorrow.”

For SAFI, the project represents an important investment in the long-term sustainability of the industry, notes Adonis: “Our goal is to ensure that South Africa’s furniture sector remains competitive, innovative and future-focused. By understanding how technology is reshaping manufacturing today, we can make better decisions that support growth, employment and industry development for years to come.”
